EPISODE THREE: ALL CREATURES GREAT AND DEADLY

Australia is home to many strange creatures, including not only the echidna and platypus, but also Glenn Bench, professional trainee assistant manager and amateur professional videogame designer. But what creatures inhabit the game within in the mind within the Glenn Bench? In today's episode, Glenn explains the cornucopia of fantastic creatures from Dark Legacy.

I'm obsessed with pushing my own envelope. I didn't want aliens, because they're really over-used, so I decided to focus on genetic experiments gone horribly wrong.

Such as?

You know how rats and cockroaches are capable of surviving in almost any environment? What if you combined the two? You'd end up with the ultimate survivalist. And I guess some scientist did it and it got loose.

Why would they create something like that?

It's a secret. It adds to the mystery of the world.

Well, what does it do?

Survives. But, like, really well. And it has wings.

Right. What other creatures will be present?

They're not all going to be genetic experiments, because it could become cliche, so some of them are mutants. Other ones are animals that we'd all recognise, but they've evolved into new forms.

I thought it was only 1000 years in the future?

Yeah. I mean, obviously evolution takes hundreds of years, so they haven't changed that much. But they've still changed. I doubt a crocodile would look the same if given time.

So how have the animals evolved?

Almost all the grass in the world is gone because it's the future, so rabbits have adapted to eat meat, in order to maintain their place in the food chain. So they have a head like a lion, only with horns. And they don't hop anymore, because they live in sewers.

Do they swim?

Good idea. I'll consider it.

Do you often take on new ideas like that?

I try to take in ideas from all around me. For example, last night I was watching Jurassic Park, and it hit me: Cars that run on rails. It symbolises how the people in the upper layers of the city are slaves to rails and corporations. And Ross Campbell has to choose between air conditioning and free will. There are also psychics that the corporations use to predict crimes.

Like in Minority Report?

Yeah, but better, because Dark Legacy doesn't have a stupid name. I mean, MINORity Report? That's a bad name because it doesn't sound important. I thought it was stupid the first time I heard it. I know it ties into the plot, but it should have been called Priority Report instead. But, like I said, the whole creative industry seems to have just lost it.

The creatures you've invented are certainly different to what people are used to.

Exactly, all it takes is dedication and talent. Sometimes I think I'm the only person who's ever been inspired by the way a tadpole evolves into a frog to defend itself. Imagine how goldfish must evolve if they're flushed down the toilet - there could be a whole undiscovered species in the sewers right now. Probably with spikes.

What?

In our next episode, we are given a world-first exclusive look at the character, enemy and weapon concept art created by Dark Neon Studios. But can any medium truly express the genius of Glenn Bench? Join us to find out.
